Stargate SG-1: Children of the Gods

For the legions of Stargate SG-1 fans who followed the series from its inception in 1997 through the final episode some 10 years later, Children of the Gods will be like taking a trip back in time, albeit with a minor detour. This is the pilot episode of the show, but under the guidance of executive producer Brad Wright, it has been polished up and given a fresh coat of paint, as it were. At 93 minutes, it’s a little shorter, with some material deleted (including a very brief nude scene) and some added. The original musical score has been restored, special effects sequences have been enhanced, and, in perhaps the most notable change, actor Christopher Judge (Teal’c) has re-voiced his entire performance. This is Stargate before there even was an SG-1 team. Only when the heroic but insouciant Col. Jack O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson), who took part in the one and only previous Stargate mission (depicted in the feature film that started the whole thing in (more…)
Lexx: Series 3, Vol. 2 (2000)

We’ve seen Xev in the shower, Stanley without his hat, and even the inside of 790’s head. So seeing Kai in the nude was only a matter of time. Following the dilemma of “Gondola,” Stan and Xev are lost among the schizophrenic denizens in “K-Town” and eventually found by a dead assassin whose biomechanical systems are malfunctioning. It takes a shock reappearance of season 2’s universe-destroying Mantrid to make sense of his groin-located repair mechanism. In “Tunnels” Kai, Stan, and Xev are split up, with Kai suffering the red tape of petty bureaucracy in Hog Town and Stan and Xev descending 39,000 steps. Stan bumps into show writer Lex Gigeroff making a cameo as insane surgeon Doctor Rainbow, and escape is determined by another death and resurrection from the enigmatic Prince (Nigel Bennett). At this halfway point in the season, the viewer should be carefully questioning this season’s premise. –Paul Tonks

Lexx: Series 2, Vol. 4 (2000)

Space nerd Stanley Tweedle and the motley crew of the simpleton living ship Lexx continue to wander around a video-game galaxy as the universe is devoured around them by the voracious Mantrid and his army of disembodied arms. They fight off the hungry undead corpses (who look suspiciously like the zombie Templars of Tombs of the Blind Dead) in “Twilight,” take a trip through Stanley’s guilt-riddled dreams in “Patches in the Sky,” meet the not-so-wonderful Wuzzard when they attempt to reset Xev’s expiration date in “Woz,” and slam into an interstellar net spun by a monstrous mind-controlling spider in “The Web.” Behind the farcical black humor and morbid running gags (does Stanley have to blow up every planet he sees?) is an increasingly melancholy edge as the universe disappears around the crew and Stanley faces up to his cowardice and irresponsibility. For Lexx, that’s almost deep. –Sean Axmaker

Stargate SG-1 – Season 10 (1997)

If this five-disc, 20-episode, tenth season set really is the end of Stargate SG-1–and considering the number of reprieves the show has already had and the rumors of various movie spin-offs, not to mention the fact that the final installment is entitled “Unending,” who knows?–then the folks responsible for this durable sci-fi series can be proud that they finished it off in style, with a run of episodes that are for the most part highly entertaining, exciting, and fun, offering resolution if not complete closure. And if sharks were jumped, at least they were small ones. As was the case in Season 9, and to a large extent in Season 8 as well, original series star Richard Dean Anderson is little in evidence here. Portraying Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell, Ben Browder, who came to Stargate SG-1 from the underrated Farscape, is now entrenched as leader of SG-1, the Stargate project’s ace team in the field, joining series veterans Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judg (more…)
